Five Reasons You Should Join Your Student-Run Firm

Are you prepared for your first professional interview? How can you demonstrate that you have the skills an employer is looking for in an employee? Consider getting an advantage over your peers by joining a student run-firm as they provide these opportunities for you to grow in the public relations field:

  1. Practical Experience

Today when you apply for entry-level positions, companies and organizations are looking for practical work experience. This can come from many different opportunities such as internships, work studies, job shadowing and part-time jobs. If your school offers a student-run firm or an organization like such, this is a great opportunity to take what you have learned in the classroom and apply it to real work for real clients.

  1. Résumé and Portfolio Builder

All of the work you have created can be transferred to your portfolio to create a collection of all of the materials you have produced.  If you hold a position in your firm, add it to your résumé. It shows employers that you are a part of something and you have valuable leadership skills that are sought after in all job fields, especially anything communication related.

  1. Networking

Joining your student-run firm is a great opportunity to meet new people and network. You will meet and work with new people in the firm; you will meet clients and foster relationships with people you never thought you would meet.

  1. Help the Community

Becoming involved in your student-run firm is a great opportunity to do work that helps the outside community. Doing service work looks great on résumés, and when interviewing it is a great talking point to bring up.

  1. Be a Part of a Team

As a part of your student-run firm, you will be working as a part of a team A LOT.  Do not fear! While you will be working alongside others for one collective project, you will find that this is not your typical group project. As a firm member you will have your own part in a larger project and your duties and responsibilities will play a vital role. Seeing your work being published makes it much easier to get the work done and feels so very rewarding when the job is done.
