The anxious feelings that freshman Gracie Hutchison experienced when she joined the Waynesburg University Public Relations Student Society of America Chapter at the start of the Fall semester are typical.

“I was a little unsure and timid initially, but everyone was so welcoming,” said Hutchison. “I quickly overcame those feelings!”

What is less typical about this Conway, Pennsylvania native is how heavily involved in the Department of Communication she has become over the past semester. In addition to her dedication to the Waynesburg University PRSSA Chapter, Hutchison handles responsibilities for three other student groups.

“I am the Social Media/Special Events Editor for the Mad Anthony Yearbook, a member of The American Institute of Graphic Arts and a staff writer for the Yellow Jacket,” said Hutchison.

This enthusiastic freshman hopes to combine her passions for all of these areas, as she is double-majoring in public relations and digital design, and might add a minor in journalism.

While Hutchison admits that her workload is heavy and that balancing classwork, student organization commitments and her social life can be challenging, she says that her fellow public relations majors have helped ease a lot of her burdens.

“I love the community not only within the Department of Communication, but within the major,” said Hutchison. “The classes are difficult, but they are so much easier to get through when you have a group supporting you and to study with.”

Post-graduation, Hutchison aspires to have a corporate job as a Digital Media Coordinator. As far as Waynesburg University PRSSA is concerned, Hutchison is still unsure of what role she is interested in holding, but she is optimistic about her future with the organization that she says has provided her with wonderful experiences thus far.

“I am actually not sure which position I would like to hold in the future, I am still finding my passion within public relations and would like to select a position that highlights that passion,” said Hutchison. “I think that I will wait until inspiration strikes!”
